The Central American Federation was a short-lived political entity that existed from 1823 to 1838, comprising the territories of present-day Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The federation was created after the region declared its independence from Spain in 1821, but the individual countries were unable to maintain stable governments on their own.

The federation was established with the aim of creating a centralised government that could better manage the region's economic and political affairs. However, the federation was plagued by internal conflicts, including disputes over power and resources, and was ultimately dissolved in 1838.

During its brief existence, the Central American Federation was able to establish a constitution, a flag, and a coat of arms, as well as adopt the currency and legal system of the former Spanish empire. Despite its failure, the idea of a Central American union continued to resonate in the region, and the federation is seen by some as a precursor to modern attempts at regional integration in Central America.
